The Cheap Robusta Coffee

The robusta coffee or lowland coffee (scientific Coffea canephora) is a species of the genus coffee (Coffea). It was discovered at 19th Century in Western Africa.

Robusta coffee grows as a shrub or tree up to eight meters high. In culture, the plants are kept in order to improve usability significantly smaller. The leaves are oblong-elliptic, rarely ovate or lanceolate. They are up to 40 centimeters long and have a clear head and sometimes a slightly wavy edge. The stipules are triangular and pointed at a length of six until 18 millimeters. The flowers are five to six, rarely seven or more and are in axillary clusters of eight and thirtieth. The coffee bean are large, ovate-elliptic.

Robusta coffee is mainly grown in lowland areas. The species is more resistant to diseases, heat and high humidity than the arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), and bears more fruit ripen faster. It accounts for about 30% of the world’s coffee crop and is grown primarily in West Africa and Southeast Asia. The fruits are usually dry processed. In the whole fruits with pulp and parchment are processed and then dried in the sun in peeling machines, which extract the actual beans. Its taste is “earthy” to “stale” and is especially appreciated in France, Spain and Eastern Europe. The caffeine content of robusta coffee is two to four percent is about twice as high as that of arabica coffee.
